Psychological Effects of Hair Loss and How to Overcome It

I am very excited to bring you this guest post today, sometimes I think the world becomes silent when issues are spoken. Hair loss is a major issue in both women and men. No one likes to lose their hair as it affects their appearance and makes them look older. Preventing hair loss is extremely difficult because there is no definite cause of the issue. However, sometimes hair loss can be controlled through a variety of treatments.

How Hair Loss Affects a Person Psychologically and How Hair Loss Can Be Prevented

Hair loss affects a person emotionally and has significant psychological effects. Some of those include:

Depression

Depression is the worst effect of hair loss. Men and women experience great difficulty dealing with their hair loss. People have also reported to lose control over their lives because of baldness. When a person finds out that he/she is losing hair and the condition cannot be reversed, he/she experiences despair and depression. People suffering from hair loss have been diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and body dysmorphic disorder which shows that hair loss is also associated with high levels of anxiety.

A person who experiences depression due to hair loss should remember that their true friends and family will love them for who they are and not for how much hair they have on their head. Losing hair doesn’t mean the end of the world and there are many other attributes that can make a person look attractive to others.

Panic

People naturally feel concerned when they start losing hair. They feel worried and start panicking about their future. Worrying questions like these arise: Will I look older? Will I lose my looks? Will others laugh at me? These concerns can create feelings of panic and fear.

Loss of Confidence

Hair loss has a major impact on a person’s appearance. Most people appear older than they really are because of baldness. This affects how a person views himself/herself.

A study found that women experience more difficulty in handling baldness than men. Most females who suffer from hair loss experience mental and emotional issues. The same study showed that 75 percent of men start losing confidence about their self-image when the hair-loss problem starts.

Hair loss also affects a person’s social activities like dating and relationships. When hair loss is experienced by younger people, they think that they have lost their youthfulness and desirability. They even start thinking that their partner finds them less attractive. Once a person has lost confidence, they hesitate to interact with others.

Bald people may also struggle to perform at the workplace. For instance, they may find it hard to talk to people which can affect their performance. There are some studies that showed that bald applicants are rejected by employers because they look older.

Humiliation

Teasing or taunting from colleagues and friends can make a person feel humiliated. This kind of behavior from friends, family or colleagues can make it difficult for a bald person to face the society. They may try to hide their condition by wearing hats and may be afraid to interact with others.

Jealousy

Both bald men and women may experience jealousy towards those who have full heads of hair. Feelings of jealousy may be conscious or unconscious.

Ways to Overcome Hair Loss

Onion Juice

Onion juice remedy is considered one of oldest and most effective natural remedies for hair loss. Onion juice contains sulfur that increases production of collagen and helps the hair to re-grow. Although onion juice has a strong smell, but it isn’t something to worry about as the smell goes away after one wash.

Onion juice can be prepared by cutting slices of onion and squeezing them. The juice should be applied on the scalp for about ten to fifteen minutes and then rinsed off with a shampoo.

Egg Mask

People often use this simple remedy for natural and quick hair growth. Eggs contain protein which helps in the growth of new hair. Eggs are also rich in zinc, sulfur, iodine, phosphorous and selenium.

Egg mask can be prepared by adding one egg white, one teaspoon of olive oil and one teaspoon of honey in a bowl. Once the paste has been made, it should be applied all over the scalp and hair for 20 minutes and then rinsed off.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is another great remedy for hair loss. Aloe Vera calms and soothes a scalp and replenishes hair cells to promote growth of new hair and stop the hair fall. Sometimes follicles can become clogged due to sebum and this prevents hair from growing back. Aloe Vera can clean up sebum.

Aloe Vera gel should be applied directly onto the scalp and allowed to stay there for a few hours. After that it should be washed with a mild shampoo.

Indian Gooseberry

Indian gooseberry is another effective treatment for hair loss. This fruit is rich in Vitamin C and promotes hair growth.

For this treatment, two teaspoons of Indian gooseberry juice or powder should be mixed with two teaspoons of lime juice and the paste should be allowed to dry. After that it should be thoroughly massed onto the scalp. It should be left on overnight and the hair should be washed the next morning.

Hair Loss Products

Apart from natural remedies, there are also other hair loss solutions available such as minoxidil and finasteride. Both minoxidil and finasteride are used for treating male pattern baldness and should only be used by adult men. Women should consider other treatment options like ‘Regaine for Women’ which is used to treat hereditary hair loss.
Ending Note

Hair loss is a problem that can experience anyone at any time in life. A person who experiences hair loss shouldn’t let this issue affect their life. They should consider natural remedies to fight hair loss and seek help from a mental health professional if psychological effects of hair loss are affecting their life.
